Some of the images from a visit to a local brick making factory (or veetbhatti as popularly known) making bricks in a traditional way. Most of these people are from karnataka and its a seasonal business from almost all of them. They settle around Pune almost 6 months before monsoon, making and selling bricks to local builders and then head back to native place for farming as the monsoon approaches.
Brick making is a very hard task as you are most of the time exposed to lot of heat, either for drying the bricks in sunlight or for baking them in specially built furnaces. In a single season several lakhs bricks are made, one furnace generally contains around 50,000 bricks and in single season they make 2 to 8 such furnaces depending upon area and manpower available. Most of these people migrate along with the families and all the family members have their helping hand in brick making.
(All this information was gathered from a single veetbhatti where I went to photograph, and it might not be applicable in generalized manner. Though the work is going on will update as much information I will get from each visit)
